I recently ran into this list of questions about your top artists list as compiled by last.fm. The idea behind is probably someone sending you a request to fill in the list, but since I have no friends, I decided to go ahead and fill it in without being asked to. Yes, I’m that opinionated…
1. How did you get into 29?
Don’t really know how I got into Fleetwood Mac. I only have one album by them, which of course is Rumours. It’s one of these bands that you just have to know, isn’t it?
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
I’m not too sure, but I think the first Elbow song I ever heard was Grounds For Divorce. I got introduced to this band by a friend, just after they released their album The Seldom Seen Kid. I was hooked ever since and went to their gig in Paradiso somewhere in 2008. It was one of the best gigs I ever attended. These guys rock on stage.
3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
I own one album by El Pino and The Volunteers; Molten City. If you’re not familiar with EP&TV, It’s a very good band, if you’re in to americana. They’re hailing from Rotterdam, The Netherlands. A while ago, I was at a live performance by the band’s guitar player, Goslink, who makes guitars out of fruit boxes, door stops and fish oil cans.
4. What is your favorite song by 15?
My favourite Paul McCartney song? For his solo work I guess that would be a track off the album Chaos And Creation In The Backyard. I think I’ll go for Friends To Go. Sir Paul’s repertoir is of course so immense, there are truckloads of equally beautiful songs. Let’s just do one Wings song and one Beatles song. For Wings I’d go for Band On The Run. My favourite Beatles song sang by Paul McCartney would be Back In The USSR, I think.
5. What is your favorite song by 5?
My favourite Jack Johnson song… I’m actually not that into the guy anymore. It’s probably still up there because I used to play his music a lot, before it went mainstream. If I had to pick a song, I guess it would be Staple It Together. Johnson makes better movies, though. Too bad he stopped making them after the world found about about this singing surfer dude.
6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
A Bløf song that makes me happy… Tough one; it’s a very melancholic band, actually. I’d stick with Misschien Niet De Eeuwigheid.
7. What is your favorite song by 10?
My favourite Foo Fighters song!? Dang, that’s so hard. I’ll pick Stacked Actors. But it would be a tie with numerous other Foo Fighters songs. These guys are my all time heroes. Watch them as they go.
8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Good memories I have involving Calexico… Tough one. I guess summer BBQ’s with El Picador playing in the background. Bring on those Desperados!
9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Hmmm, a Queens Of The Stone Age song that makes me happy… Most of ‘em just get me amped! I guess Make It With Chu makes me happy. Oh, and these guys rock on stage! Multi-talent Josh Homme has some interesting side projects, as well. He recorded the Arctic Monkeys’ upcoming album and is also part of the band Eagles Of Death Metal. Check those guys out!
10. How many times have you seen 26 live?
I’ve seen Jamie Lidell live once, in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Great gig! This guy has serious skills.
11. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Oh I totally know the answer to that one! The first Alan Parsons Project song I ever heard was Mammagamma. It was used in a documentary I watched in elementary school. The teacher noted that it was an Alan Parsons Project song, he was obviously a fan. I hated that teacher, but the despite that the song stuck with me. I actually only have a Best Of doubler by Alan Parsons Project. I still regularly play it.
12. What is your favorite album by 11?
Favourite Red Hot Chilli Peppers album is definitely Californication, although Stadium Arcadium is a good second.
13. Who is your favorite member of 1?
That can ony be one of course; Jamiroquai front man Jason Kay. Not in the least bit for his passion for cars! For a demonstration, check out Jamiroquai’s video clip for the song Cosmic Girl. One of those cars actually got wrecked on transport to the US for the recording of that clip, if I recall correctly.
14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Nr. 14 is a tie with 13! Both Pink Floyd and El Pino and The Volunteers are on 13, so I’ll pick Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd broke up way before I could ever see them live. But I got as close as I could ever get; I saw Roger Waters’ Dark Side of The Moon show three times! It’s an amazing show. One part are solo and Pink Floyd songs, and one part is an integral version of Dark Side Of The Moon, complete with all the quadraphonic sound effects. It’s one of the most spectacular shows I have ever witnessed. This guy is one gifted artist.
15. What is a good memory involving 27?
A good memory involving Ad Vanderveen; I guess that would be my road trip to Tarifa, Spain in 2001. I played his songs a lot while on the road. Check out the song Wannabe, where he goes against the fact that a lot of people compare the guy to Neil Young, The Stones and Van Morrison.
16. What is your favorite song by 16?
My favourite Crowded House song is probably Four Seasons In One Day. It’s Only Natural is a good second, though.
17. What is your favorite album by 18?
My favourite Room Eleven album is Six Russians and a Pink Pussycat. They stepped away from the jazzy sound a bit too far on their new album, in my opinion.
18. What is your favorite song by 21?
My favourite Corrine Bailey Rae song is… lemme think… Trouble Sleeping, I guess.
19. What is the first song you ever heard by 25?
The first Lizz Wright song I ever heard was on a North Sea Jazz collection, I can’t recall the title though.
20. What is your favorite album by 2?
My favourite Fink album is still Biscuits For Breakfast. Did you know the next album, Distance And Time, was produced by Lamb’s Andy Barlow?
21. What is your favorite song by 3?
My favourite Neil Young track… That’s probably a tie between Down By The River and Cinnamon Girl.
22. What is your favorite song by 8?
My favourite Turin Brakes song is probably Red Moon, in the version it appeared on the Red Moon EP.
23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
I haven’t seen Tom McRae live, actually!
24. What is the worst song by 12?
The worst Lenny Kravitz song… I’d go for Black Girl. It’s teeth-murdering sweet.
25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
The first G. Love & Special Sauce song I ever heard was probably Rodeo Clowns. I believe it was part of the sound track of the Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer video game. That’s how I got to know the band.
26. What is your favorite album by 9?
My favourite Coldplay album is still Parachutes.
27. What is your favorite song by 24?
My favourite Raúl Midón song is probably State Of Mind. Amazing what that guy does to a guitar. And to think he’s as blind as a bat!
28. Is there a song by 7 that makes you happy?
I like the song This Ain’t No Love by David Gray.
29. What is your favorite album by 4?
My favourite Muse album? I think that would be Black Holes and Revelations, although I’m VERY curious about their upcoming album!
30. How many albums do you own by 20?
I have one Bill Withers album; a Best Of. I love playing it. Top tracks to me are Grandma’s Hands, Use Me and Ain’t No Sunshine.
